NYC fire kills one; neighbor rescues others

BROOKLYN The good Samaritan, Chakka Bess, climbed a fire escape and smashed a window to rescue a woman and a 15-year-old from the Bedford-Stuyvesant building.

Bess also climbed onto an adjacent roof while trying to get to the woman's husband, who was clinging to a window sill 40 feet off the ground. But the man fell before Bess could reach him Despite his heroism, Bess said: "I'll never be able to forgive myself, no matter how hard I know I tried."

The victim is identified as 58-year-old Clyde Brown. An extension cord draped around a refrigerator appears to be the cause.
