Runoff fears close Long Island beaches

Long Island officials have closed more than two dozen beaches and are advising swimmers to avoid 63 others. The issue: concerns that storm water runoff could spike high levels of bacteria.A day after closing four south shore beaches, Nassau County announced Thursday that 18 beaches on Long Island Sound were closed until further notice. Neighboring Suffolk County closed three beaches and issued the advisory for 63 others.

Health officials say the closings are just a precaution. Heavy rain has pummeled the New York metropolitan area in the past 24 hours, causing some local flooding.
