Verizon begins selling cable in NYC

New York City residents can now subscribe to cable television through another company.Verizon Communications Inc. begins selling cable service in all five boroughs Monday, joining Cablevision and Time Warner Cable in a competition for subscribers.

The phone company signed an agreement with the city for a 12-year cable television franchise. Verizon projects its television service will reach 500,000 households by the end of 2008.

Time Warner and Cablevision will see their 10-year contracts expire this year. The city has said that it is negotiating with both companies for new contracts.
