Tough times mean more property tax appeals

Tough economic times have large numbers of New Jersey shore homeowners challenging their property tax assessments with review boards. Nearly 6,000 appeals have been filed in Monmouth and Ocean counties.

Tax officials say only about a third of the appeals usually receive reductions.

But a substantial number of area homeowners have shown themselves willing to pay $5 to $150 in appeal filing fees.

New Jersey's property taxes are the nation's highest.
