Stuck in the Empire State Building

MANHATTAN - They suddenly found themselves stuck in the Midtown landmark after electrical crews hit a circuit and knocked out power.

About a thousand people found themselves stuck, waiting to go up and come down, because the elevators stopped working around 8:30.

"There were a lot of people up there, but no p-a system was working," Anina Simpson said.

About 500 people were on the observation deck when the two elevators stopped working.

The other elevators were stopped to avoid overcrowding and the possibility that they would also stop working.

Two women were injured when, witness said, they had to jump off the stuck lifts about a foot to the floor. Both were taken to the hospital.

No comment from the management company, except to say that those who did get stuck got refunds.

The elevators started working about a half-hour after the problem began and the tours resumed.
