Driver killed in freak accident on LIE

Car pulling away from accident, fatally struck by tractor-trailer
MASPETH Eyewitness News is told the 61-year-old driver's car was struck by the tractor-trailer while pulling back into traffic following a westbound crash, near Maurice Avenue, just before 3 a.m. this morning.

The driver had apparently just completed exchanging information with the driver of another car.

Police say he pulled into the path of the tractor-trailer, and was killed in the ensuing crash. The driver of the westbound tractor-trailer was treated for injuries.

According to reports an ambulance and at least one other vehicle, attempting to avoid the crash, also collided. Two EMS workers from the ambulance were treated, as well as three others.

The crash closed the westbound Long Island Expressway for hours. Traffic was diverted off at Grand Avenue.
