Vigil for boy, 9, shot in the head

BROOKLYN - The vigil came as an intense manhunt was underway for the gunman who opened fire near a crowd of children gathered at 1670 Pacific Street shortly after 9:00 p.m. on Monday

According to police, 9-year-old boy ShamShawan Kelly was standing with a group of four or five other children.

Police said Kelly was caught in the middle of a gun battle. He tried to run, but one of the bullets hit him.

"He was right here on the stoop and my mother was trying to suppress the bleeding. I just tried to help her and help the EMS workers get him in the truck as fast as possible," his brother, Johnnie Flocker, said.

Flocker said his brother was improving, even wiggling his toes.

Community leaders were urging people to come forward to help identify the shooter. They also urged young people to get rid of their weapons.

Police said they were talking to several witnesses.

Crimestoppers is offering a $12,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction. If you can help, contact Crimestoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
