A type of tornado called a water spout briefly touched down off Long Island's north shore as a series of thunderstorms rolled through the area. The National Weather Service says the rotating column of air that looked like a funnel-shaped cloud touched down in Lloyd Harbor on Thursday afternoon.

A water spout tends to be weaker than a land-based tornado.

The weather service says no damage to boats or other watercraft has been reported. It says the water spout never made it to land.
