An off-duty Suffolk County Corrections Officer was fighting for his life after being viciously attacked, police said. The incident happened at the popular Publick House at Bowden Square in Southampton.

The officer, 40-year-old Andrew Reister, is also employed as a bouncer at the bar.

Investigators said Reister asked a patron to stop dancing on a table around 1:00 Thursday morning.

The patron, Anthony Oddone, 25, of 55 Clover Ave., Farmingville, allegedly held Reister in a choke hold and continued choking Reister for a significant period of time even after Reister was unconscious.

A number of people unsuccessfully attempted to stop Oddone, who fled the scene in a taxi.

Southampton Village Police arrested Oddone a short time later.

Oddone was charged with Assault 1st Degree and arraigned today at Southampton Village Justice Court. He is being held on $500,000 bail.

Reister was listed in extremely critical condition at Stony Brook University Medical Center.
