Ex-Passaic mayor sentenced to 21 months

TRENTON (AP) - He resigned last year after he pleaded guilty to attempted extortion. Rivera admitted accepting $5,000 in cash to influence government contracts.

The former mayor was among 10 public officials from around New Jersey caught in an investigation after he promised city contracts to a bogus insurance company that was set up by the FBI. Before he was sentenced Friday, Rivera blamed poor judgment for his predicament.
