Former Passaic Mayor Samuel Rivera has been sentenced to 21 months in prison and ordered to pay a $4,000 fine for his part in a corruption scheme. He resigned last year after he pleaded guilty to attempted extortion. Rivera admitted accepting $5,000 in cash to influence government contracts.

The former mayor was among 10 public officials from around New Jersey caught in an investigation after he promised city contracts to a bogus insurance company that was set up by the FBI. Before he was sentenced Friday, Rivera blamed poor judgment for his predicament.
