Kids left home alone over weekend

JERSEY CITY Jersey City police say they still can't find the children's mother. The kids, ranging in age from 6 to 11, reportedly told police they were by themselves all weekend. Then, they say, their mom returned around 5:30 a.m., got ready for work and left again.

An anonymous caller alerted a child abuse hotline to the three kids, ages 11, 9 and 6, being left alone in a third-floor apartment.

Neighbors saw an ambulance come for the children this morning.

"I heard loud noises and sounds like kids crying, but I never paid attention to it because there's a lot of kids on the block," neighbor Erica Dawson said. "I never knew that it was anybody home alone."

A Jersey City spokesman says the kids were taken to Jersey City Medical Center to be checked out. They are all OK, and DYFS is taking over from there.

A neighbor who lives across the street says the working mother appears to be a devoted parent.

Other moms in the neighborhood say if she indeed left her kids alone for three days, it was a dangerous decision.

"I have a 15-year-old, and I barely leave him alone by himself," resident Sabrina Washington said.

"It's rough out here in the neighborhood, I would never leave my kids by themselves," Dawson said. "Not like that, not over the weekend."

Police say the apartment is very clean and the kids had plenty of food. No charges have been filed, police simply want to speak to the woman about what may have happened.
