5 towns benefit from I-287 tickets

NEW JERSEY That's because police in Bloomingdale, Mahwah, Oakland, Riverdale and Pequannock are busy writing tickets along Interstate 287. Money from those tickets helps pay for municipal courts and other services.

Bloomingdale police issued more than $101,000 in summonses along the highway last year. That paid for nearly half the municipal court's income.

Some 94 percent of the 4,131 cases that went through the town's municipal court in 2007 were traffic citations. Nearly half of those were issued on Route 287.

Police say they're just enforcing the law and trying to keep the highway safe.
