Serbia wants fugitive to return to U.S.

SERBIA That's according to Miladin Kovacevic's his lawyer in Serbia, where 20-year-old basketball player fled after allegedly beating a 22-year-old student from Brooklyn into a coma last May.

Kovacevic's lawyer says Serbia officials have tried to convince him to voluntarily return to the U.S., but he refuses to go.

The lawyer also says his client has turned down a plea bargain deal from the United States under which he would plead guilty to assault and evading justice, and serve 12 years in prison.

The 6-foot-9 Kovacevic is accused of severely beating Bryan Steinhauer during a fight in a Binghamton bar. Steinhauer recently started to emerge from a coma that resulted from the fight.
