Old firehouse collapses before move

PEEKSKILL (AP) - Peekskill police Sgt. Eric Johansen says a crew was doing final preparation work before Friday's planned move when the old Centennial Firehouse "became unstable and just fell in" at about noon Thursday. He says no one was injured.

The sergeant says the two-story firehouse is now "a pile of bricks."

The north-south Route 9 highway is being widened near the abandoned firehouse. The city had decided to move the firehouse a block away, where it would have become part of a historic district including a train station where Abraham Lincoln spoke in 1861.
