Schumer gets convention speaking role

New York Sen. Charles Schumer will speak at the Democratic National Convention, highlighting his role in trying to win more seats in the U.S. Senate. Schumer chairs the Senate Democrats' campaign efforts, reprising his successful effort in 2006, when his party picked up enough seats to hold a slim majority. Schumer hopes to strengthen that edge this year.

Party officials say the senator will speak the night of Aug. 27 after the roll call and will be flanked by some of those he is working to propel to the U.S. Senate.

Former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton will be honored during the roll call at the Denver convention. Clinton is New York's other senator.
