Arrest in plot to kill wife for $27K ring

NEW YORK Police said the hit man was an undercover officer, and Rockefeller Auguste was arrested at his Manhattan office Thursday on charges of conspiracy to commit murder and criminal possession of a weapon.

Police say the 35-year-old Auguste, a designer at an architectural firm, suspected his wife was cheating and began abusing her. They say he gave the undercover officer a samurai sword, a deposit and specific instructions to kill the woman, cut off her left hand and bring back the ring.

His 26-year-old wife moved out of their Brooklyn home a few months ago after filing a domestic abuse report.

Auguste was awaiting arraignment Friday, and it could not be immediately determined if he had a lawyer.

A woman who answered the phone early Friday at his home said she had no comment. She said she was his sister but declined to give her name.

A man who identifed himself as Auguste's father said: "He doesn't touch nobody. He's one quiet man."
