2 killed in speedboat accident

LONG ISLAND A Coast Guard official says the boat was racing in the Great South Bay in Patchogue.

Witness Ralph Lettieri said right around turn two he started losing control of the boat. It was going side to side, then he lost control and the boat flipped over.

Lettieri was about a thousand feet away when Team Aero Express was in 4th place near the second turn when the boat flipped.

From nearly a mile away, Frank Buckley knew it was a bad accident.

"I've raced. I know when you see a splash like that something happened to the boat. It's not good. It's very bad," he said.

The Coast Guard says two things likely led to this crash -- The speed that the boat was going and the choppy waters. Dozens of investigators are on scene trying to figure out what happened.

Both men, from Port Washington, where rushed to Brookhaven Hospital where they were pronounced dead.

The race was The Battle On The Bay. It is presented by the Offshore Powerboat Association/Geico Miss Geico Triple Crown Series.
