Woman survives elevator shaft plunge

A tourist visiting a Brooklyn church with her son stepped into an empty elevator shaft Tuesday morning and plunged 20 feet. Authorities say the 37-year-old victim may have been distracted by her son when she stepped into the empty shaft inside 1528 Pitkin Avenue just before 11:40 a.m.

Her son watched in horror as she fell down the shaft. She landed onto debris, which appears to have cushioned the fall.

The woman was conscious as rescue workers pulled her out.

She was taken to Brookdale University Hospital in stable condition. Her son was "a little bit upset," but with his mother at the hospital. She and her son were visiting from out of the country.

The mishap will be investigated by the Buildings Department.
