Fire claims toddler's life

STATEN ISLAND - Police say the boy was taken from the two-story Staten Island home and was declared dead at a hospital.

The fire happened at 69 Woehrle Avenue just after 7:30 p.m.

Investigators said a mother and her 12 children and grandchildren lived in the house. Everyone but the boy got out safely.

The little boy was sleeping in a back bedroom when the fire broke out.

Neighbors who heard the mother's screams for help tried to get into the house the save the child, but the fire and smoke was too intense.

Two other children suffered minor injuries.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The name of the boy was not immediately released.
