Man arrested in LI mailbox explosion

LAUREL HOLLOW, N.Y. Nassau County police say 31-year-old Julian Townsent detonated a small pipe bomb inside the mailbox of a home in Laurel Hollow. They say a resident heard a loud "muffler sound" coming from a car outside the home about 6:20 p.m. Thursday and looked out a window.

Residents on Dix Hills Court reported hearing a loud explosion and then finding the mailbox and its contents strewn throughout the street. Detectives determined that a small pipe bomb was ignited within the mailbox.

Additional information obtained by detectives led to the arrest of Townsend, who is charged with first-degree criminal mischief.
