Man accused of tossing dog off balcony

NEW YORK Sherman Haynes was arrested Friday on charges including aggravated animal cruelty. Prosecutors and animal welfare agents are unsure whether he has a lawyer, and no telephone number can be found for him.

American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals assistant director Joseph Pentangelo says Haynes began tossing his girlfriend's furniture and clothes off a balcony after she came to collect them last September. Pentangelo says the suspect then threw the shih tzu, Zahara.

The roughly 3-year-old dog was rushed to an all-night animal hospital but died of injuries that included collapsed lungs.

Pentangelo says Haynes eluded investigators for months.
