Mom accused of leaving child home alone

Disguised in a wig, Susan Beckford tried to slip out of court, but the New York City correction officer couldn't escape a judge's wrath. Beckford was arrested on Wednesday after allegedly leaving her 7-year old daughter home alone while she went to work a double shift at Rikers Island.

No comment outside, but her union-appointed attorney told the judge the incident was a misunderstanding. Beckford believed a cousin was watching her daughter when she left her home at 5:00 a.m.

Prosecutors say the cousin himself left for work at 8:00 a.m. Around 1:30 p.m. police got a 911 call they believe was from the young girl.

Police eventually found the girl locked in a bedroom.

In setting bail the judge told Beckford, "as a mother, this story doesn't ring true," telling the 39-year old that her job as a parent is more important and requires more responsibility than her duties as a corrections cop.
