16 injured in Waterbury fire

WATERBURY, Conn. (AP) - The two-alarm fire was reported shortly before 4 a.m. Thursday at the Eastgate complex on Main Street. Fire officials say the blaze started in a first-floor apartment and sent smoke throughout the four-story building before being contained.

Authorities evacuated the building, and firefighters rescued several people through their apartment windows using a ladder truck.

Officials say 13 residents and a firefighter were taken to local hospitals, and two residents were brought to Bridgeport Hospital's burn center with serious injuries. The firefighter has a shoulder injury, and many of those hospitalized are being treated for smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
