A bicyclist has been struck and killed by a Long Island Rail Road train. LIRR officials say the man was hit by a westbound train at the Stewart Avenue crossing near the Bethpage train station about 4:34 p.m. Wednesday. The man was pronounced dead shortly after the accident. He has not been identified.

Railroad spokesman Sam Zambuto says a preliminary investigation indicates the gates were operating properly as a train from Ronkonkoma to Penn Station went through the crossing.

Metropolitan Transit Authority police are investigating the accident, which caused nearly two-hour delays on both eastbound and westbound tracks.
