A Spanish radio talk show host from Massachusetts was beaten into a coma by two bat-wielding men during a disturbingly violent robbery in the Fordham section of the Bronx. Authorities say 52-year-old Pelagio De La Cruz was pummeled as he returned to his estranged wife's apartment building at 2460 Davidson Avenue at around 3:35 a.m. Sunday.

De La Cruz was at the front door of the building when he was jumped by the two men, one armed with a bat, according to police.

The first suspect reportedly attacked with a bat, quickly dropping De La Cruz to the ground. The second suspect then approached and stole the victim's wallet and cell phone. Authorities say De La Cruz was struck eight times in the head with the bat.

De La Cruz was rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he is in critical condition in a coma. Authorities say he will need reconstruction surgery and may lose an eye.

De La Cruz was reportedly visiting his children - ages 15, 17 and 22.

During the week, he hosts a radio show from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. on WESX 1030 AM in Chelsea, Massachusetts. The show, named Coneccion Hispanica, addresses issues facing the Hispanic community.

Authorities believe robbery was the motive for the attack.

The NYPD released a portion of the surveillance video of the attack in an attempt to identify the suspect. In another portion, which was not released, the victim can be seen sustaining extremely serious injuries. It was described as "gruesome."

The suspects then fled in a dark-colored four-door sedan.

Anyone with information in regards to this incident is asked to call the NYPD's CrimeStoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS. All information will be kept strictly confidential.
