Jeweler caught after 18 years on run

YORKTOWN, N.Y. Westchester police say the jeweler from the former Soviet Union was arrested last week trying to cross the U.S.-Canadian border to Buffalo with a forged Israeli passport.

The jeweler had been living in New York City in late 1989 when Westchester police issued a warrant accusing him of stealing the diamonds from a Yorktown jeweler. He allegedly committed similar crimes in Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Ohio before becoming a fugitive in 1990.

The jeweler is being held without bail at the Westchester County jail on a felony grand larceny charge.
