Second person dies from Legionnaires'

NEW BRUNSWICK State Health Department spokeswoman Marilyn Riley says the man died at Saint Peter's University Hospital on Monday.

Another male patient who'd contracted the disease died on Sept. 12.

Three men and three women at the hospital were diagnosed with the disease over the last two weeks. All were being treated for other serious illnesses.

The hospital is treating the water supply with high levels of chlorine to kill the bacteria that cause the disease.

Legionnaires' disease is a type of pneumonia that can be spread through plumbing and air conditioning systems. It can be fatal in people with compromised immune systems.
