According to investigators, two vehicles collided and one of them went out of control and into the mother and her 6-year-old son.
They were taken to Kings County Hospital in very serious condition. The boy was pronounced dead a short time later.
Four people in the vehicles also suffered injuries.
One was taken to the hospital in stable condition. The other three were treated at the scene.
