Two women who delivered babies at Staten Island University Hospital contracted meningitis, but their newborns are healthy. The city Department of Health is investigating the cases.

The women's spinal chord fluid became infected on Friday after they gave birth, hospital officials told the Staten Island Advance.

The women were put in isolation for 24 hours and are recovering.

Meningitis is contagious and can be fatal. Antibiotics are usually an effective treatment.
