Two dead in Passaic apartment fire

PASSAIC, N.J. The fire broke out in the two-story complex on River Road just after 1:45 a.m.

The Fire Chief tells Eyewitness News the fire moved quickly through the building.

Firefighters from Passaic and Clifton arrived, and found the body of a woman before putting out the flames. After distinguishing the fire, they found the body of a man as well.

Broken-hearted friends said the woman was disabled and stayed in a hospital bed in the living room.

Family victims identify the male victim as Ron Christopher.

"I just know that they were really nice people," said one neighbor.

The blaze appears to have started in the kitchen area.

"They(the victims) were working their way towards the front to get down the stairs, and that's where we found them both," said Patrick Trentacost, Passaic Fire Chief.

The unmarried victims had been living in the complex for nearly 20 years.

Some residents of the buildings say the fire alarms and sprinklers in the building, had not been working.

The cause of the blaze is still under investigation, but authorities believe it's accidental.
