Melissa del Valle Ortiz is more than just a Hometown Hero; she wears so many hats that she just might be a superhero. Not only is she a friend to everyone in her community, but also, Melissa is a single mother of two teenagers, the Parent-Teacher Association President, the Block Association President, the Tenant Association President, and a member of at least four other boards. In addition to all of those duties, Melissa recently organized her Twenty Year High School Reunion, is in the process of organizing a Class Year Committee, and serves as the Executive VP for the national board for Norman Thomas High School while still finding time to make the costumes for the Halloween Parade.

Melissa del Valle Ortiz is a valued and important member of her community, particularly for her work over the past three years with the local housing agency to prepare and educate over 500 neighborhood families as to their rights when their Section 8 contracts expire. To date, Melissa has saved families from illegal evictions, referred troubled families to community resources, and has been an invaluable resource of information to everyone she meets. She is a real hero because she is the type of person who is always ready to lend a helping hand to others.
