Crime up at Princeton U

PRINCETON, N.J. The increase in crimes for 2007 was reported as part of Princeton's annual disclosure under the federal Campus Security Act.

Princeton's report shows a fivefold increase in alcohol violations. Drug abuse offenses climbed 45 percent. There was also an increase in aggravated assault and sex offenses, from 12 in 2006 to 14 in 2007.

Princeton University Public Safety Director Steven Healy says it's hard to pinpoint why there would be an increase in crime for a single year.

One factor may be Princeton's new initiative to curb high-risk drinking on campus, which included more foot patrols in and around residence halls last year.
