A man is accused of beating his 11-year-old stepson with a belt and buckle and locking his wife in the basement of the family's Long Island home. Police arrested the 34-year-old West Hempstead man on charges of assault, criminal possession of a weapon, unlawful imprisonment, endangering the welfare of a child and resisting arrest.

The boy and his wife were treated at a nearby hospital for bruises, cuts and whip marks.

Police say the man beat the boy after the child admitted he had not done his chores - including washing his stepfather's laundry.

When his wife tried to intervene, he locked her in the basement of their Elm Street home.

Police say she escaped and tried to stop her husband again, but that he beat her until she fled.
