Brookhaven Lab investigating blast

BROOKHAVEN, N.Y. No one was injured in the incident, which occurred at 9:30 p.m.

Monday. There was substantial damage to the pump station but adjacent buildings were not damaged. Power and water in the area have been shut off.

Lab officials said Tuesday an investigation into the cause is underway, but that it appears the explosion was caused by a propane leak in the building.

The Brookhaven Lab is run by the U.S. Department of Energy. It conducts research in physical, biomedical and environmental sciences, as well as in energy technologies and national security.
