Pediatrician accused of sex abuse

NEW YORK Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau announced Friday the indictment of 47-year-old Jaime Cortes, who was arrested on September 1. He faces multiple counts of criminal sexual act and one count of sexual abuse.

Cortes has been a doctor since 1990 and has medical practices in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens.

Morgenthau said the investigation revealed that on September 16, Cortes sexually abused the victim inside his office at 4260 Broadway in Manhattan. An office employee reported Cortes to the New York State Central Registry.

The DA said the investigation further revealed that Cortes began soliciting sexual contact with the victim when the child was 10 years old. Cortes allegedly bought the victim cell phones, gave him money and sent inappropriate text messages and graphic photographs to the victim's cell phone.

The investigation, which is being conducted by the District Attorney's Child Abuse Bureau and the New York City Police Department Manhattan Special Victims Squad, is continuing as to other victims. A hotline has been established for children who may have been victimized to call: 212-335-4300.

Cortes has been indicted on four counts of second-degree criminal sexual act and one count of third-degree sexual abuse. If convicted on all charges, he faces more than seven years in prison.

Cortes pleaded not guilty Thursday night and was released on bail. He is due back in court on October 23.
