Fatal high-rise fire on Roosevelt Island

ROOSEVELT ISLAND Firefighters discovered the woman's body after responding to the 5:30 a.m. blaze on the 11th floor of her high-rise apartment building.

Police identified the victim as 64-year-old Mary Madriguera, of Queens.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Fire Department officials said they suspected that carelessly handled smoking materials touched off the blaze.
