Thief drives off with child in SUV

WALLKILL, N.Y. Little Mikie Stone is back in his mother's arms.

Christine Stone drove to her local deli at 295 Wawayanda Avenue in Middletown, Orange County to withdraw some cash.

Three-year-old Michael had just fallen asleep so she left the toddler in his carseat and left the engine running. She figured she needed only a minute, but a minute was all it took.

"I saw a man on the corner, didn't think anything of it. I saw him get in my truck. I saw my truck leave with my baby in the back seat," she said.

With her heart in her hand, she screamed for help. A massive search was launched.

Thirty minutes later, the SUV was spotted in a parking lot near Bellevernon Avenue and the Mechanicstown Elementary School.. The driver was long gone, but little Michael was still in the back seat. Still asleep.

"We looked in the vehicle and found the child unharmed. Safe," said Middletown police chief Matthew Byrne.

Unfortunately, there were some injuries. While racing to the scene, we're told a police cruiser got into an accident with a minivan and struck a crossing guard. The driver, the officer and the crossing guard sustained injuries, but all are expected to survive.
