Investors managed to avoid a late-session sell-off, as the market edged higher at the close. The positive showing for the market came after the government reported that the economy contracted in the third quarter, but not as much as feared.

The Dow gained nearly 190 points to 9,180.

The S&P surged about 24 points to 954.

And the Nasdaq composite added 41 points to 1,698.

Advancing issues outnumbered decliners by a 4 to 1 margin.

NYSE volume came to about 6 billion shares. Volume on the Nasdaq stock market was 2.5 billion shares.
