Man dies aboard Rome-to-New York flight

NEW YORK A Port Authority of New York and New Jersey spokeswoman says authorities are investigating an elderly man's death on an Alitalia Airlines flight. The plane landed on schedule Thursday afternoon at John F. Kennedy International Airport.

No details about the passenger or how he died have been disclosed. Alitalia hasn't returned telephone or e-mail messages.

Hundreds of people have died on airplanes in recent years. But fatalities and serious illnesses in flight are rare considering the massive number of passengers.

The deaths drew attention after a woman died on a Haiti-to-New York flight in February. Her family complained the flight crew did too little to help her, which the airline denied.
