Fire destroys century-old church

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. Fire officials believe there was nobody in the River Church when it erupted in flames Thursday.

Deputy Fire Chief Edward Decker says the church sprinkler system didn't go off.

The non-denominational Christian church is the polling site for the city's 6th Ward, and Election Commissioner Fran Knapp says three lever voting machines were in the church at the time of the fire.

Knapp said notices will be sent to voters identifying an alternative voting site.
