Empire State Building lights up for election

November 4, 2008 10:48:02 AM PST
It's a historic presidential election, even for the Empire State Building. The iconic skyscraper is splitting its tower lights Tuesday night between red for Republican candidate John McCain, and blue for Democrat Barack Obama. It's part of an unprecedented four nights of election-themed lighting.

Plans call for featuring the winner's color Wednesday night, provided the race is resolved. If not, the red-blue divide will remain.

The building sported red, blue and white lights to celebrate democracy on Monday. The same scheme is planned Thursday.

The tower has taken on election-related lighting for a single night during some past balloting. It was illuminated for the first time to signal Franklin D. Roosevelt's White House win in 1932.
