The Monroe man charged with drunken driving in a crash that killed a teen and injured four others was acquitted in a deadly crash more than 20 years ago. William Bebert was tried on an aggravated manslaughter charge in 1986. He was accused of driving over a man in Perth Amboy when he was 17. The victim died months later of an infection.

The son of a deceased Sayreville police officer was acquitted after his lawyer argued Bebert acted out of fear after the victim attacked him and his friends while they looked to buy marijuana.

Authorities say the 42-year-old was drunk when his pickup slammed into a car carrying five teens as it backed out of a driveway on Monday night.

He currently has 10 points on his driver's license.

Bebert is held on $100,000 bail.
