Westchester County passes calorie-posting law

NEW YORK The Board of Legislators passed the calorie labeling law by a 15-1 vote Monday.

The law requires restaurant chains with at least 15 locations worldwide to display calorie counts on menus and menu boards. About 600 chain restaurants will be affected.

The law takes effect 180 days after it's signed by the county executive. A spokeswoman says it could be signed this month.

A calorie labeling law has been passed in New York City. Like the new Westchester law, its goals include curbing obesity and preventing diabetes and heart disease.
