Ailey Ascending: A Portrait in Motion

NEW YORK The June Kelly gallery is featuring portraits from the new book "Ailey Ascending: A Portrait in Motion."

The coffee table book captures the company's signature dances and also gives a look backstage and at the Ailey Dance school.

Artistic director Judith Jamison hopes the book will entice new fans to come see the group live.

A special exhibition of photographs has been staged at the June Kelly Gallery (591 Broadway) from November 14 through December 9.

Acclaimed photographer Andrew Eccles captures the company's passion, beauty and humanity with more than 85 images. In the book's afterword, Eccles explains that Jamison granted him unprecedented access to the dancers for an entire year, and "the freedom to conceive and create conceptual photographs.

The result," he says, "is the best work I've created in my career to date."
