Falling tree kills man in Orange, NJ

November 15, 2008 8:16:31 PM PST
A man walking along a street in Orange was killed when a 50-foot-tall silver maple tree cracked at the base and fell on him.Authorities said 42-year-old Michael Wideman of Orange was walking on South Center Street at about 2 p.m. Saturday when the tree crashed down in front of a four-story apartment building. It was not immediately clear if Wideman lived in the building.

Officials were trying to determine what caused the tree to fall, but noted storms containing heavy rains and strong winds - some gusting as high as 30 mph - had passed through the area during the day.
