According to police, at least six suspects tried to rob a variety store at Lefferts and Nostrand Avenues.
One of the suspects and the store owner pulled out guns and exchanged shots, investigators said.
Two of the six suspects are dead.
The store owner was taken to Kings County Hospital in critical condition. He was described as a well-known and well-liked fixture in the community.
The other four suspects fled on foot, witnesses said.
