Robbery attempt ends in deadly shootout

An attempted robbery at a store ended in a gun battle that left two suspects dead and the store owner critically wounded.The gun battle erupted around 8:20 p.m. Monday in the Wingate section of Brooklyn.

According to police, two men tried to rob a variety store at Lefferts and Nostrand avenues at gunpoint with an accomplice nearby.

The store owner, nicknamed "Africa" by area residents, pulled out a gun and a shootout followed, investigators said.

The two suspected robbers were fatally shot. Africa was shot in the stomach and an employee in the leg.

The store owner was taken to Kings County Hospital, where he underwent surgery. He is listed in critical but stable condition. He was described as a well-known and well-liked fixture in the community.

The other suspect fled on foot, witnesses said.
