Police say 29-year-old Victoria Cuadros and her 6-year-old son tried to cross the street at Morris Avenue and Doughty Boulevard just before 5 p.m. Friday when an SUV sped in their direction. They were in the crosswalk, according to police.
Witnesses say her first and only thought was the safety of her only child.
They say she pushed her son out of the way just before the SUV plowed into her.
Cuadros was rushed by helicopter to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow, where she died a few hours later.
Her son has leg pain, but was not seriously hurt.
Police say the person who hit Cuadros was driving either a maroon or brown Chevy or GMC Tahoe or Yukon with dark tinted windows, oversized tires and chrome wheels.
It was last seen turning left onto westbound Morris Avenue from Southbound Doughty.
Cuadros family can't believe the person didn't stop.
They are not just asking, they are begging anyone who knows anything come forward. Anyone with information is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. All calls are confidential.
