Forty people are out of their homes after a stairway collapsed. The incident happened inside an apartment building at 349 East 193rd Street in Fordham.

A landing between the 2nd and 3rd floors collapsed shortly after 8:00 p.m., officials said.

One person who was on the landing at the time suffered injuries, but they are not considered life-threatening.

There are a total of 8 apartments above the collapsed landing.

Fire officials said 27 adults and 13 children were evacuated. The Red Cross was providing shelter for most of them.

Some residents say there was construction being done on the stairs earlier in the day. DOB is investigating.
