Former NYC Mayor Dinkins hospitalized

NEW YORK Dinkins, the city's first black mayor, is a patient at New York Presbyterian Weill-Cornell Medical Center.

His law partner, Peter Johnson Jr., said Dinkins was admitted to the hospital to have a new heart valve installed.

Johnson said Dinkins will likely remain in the hospital another 10 to 12 days.

Earlier this year, doctors at the same hospital installed a pacemaker to regulate the heartbeat of the 81-year-old Dinkins.

The Manhattan Democrat served a four-year-term as mayor from 1990 to 1993, when he was succeeded by his political nemesis, Republican Rudy Giuliani.
